Robert Heinlein was considered one of the 'Big Three' science fiction writers of his time along with Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clark. His attention to plausible science in his books and his high literary quality of writing raised the bar of science fiction and set his stories, such as Starship Troopers and Stranger in a Strange Land, as some of the greatest science fiction classics of all time.

When Tor asked me to do a cover for a new Heinlein book, I was very excited to pay homage to this master of the genre. Since his themes are often so universal and focus greatly on social and cultural ideas, I didn't want to use too much blatant science fiction imagery in this piece. Though his stories are set in other worlds, his observations and depictions of humanity are very recognizable. With that in mind, I chose imagery that portrays Heinlein as the forward thinker he was, looking off into distant galaxies and surrounded by only a few symbols of progress to connect humanity with the rest of the universe.
