Continuing my exploration of human tragedies, this recent commission for the second book in a series by L.E. Modesitt opened a new door for me. The protagonist of the story must negotiate the politics of the wealthy and balance that against the needs of the common person.
The horse is left intentionally ambiguous as a symbol of physical threat and power- is it a statue or a live creature ready to crush the peasants below? The unknown matter falling from the sky plays into the disconcerting theme - snow, ash or mana? What and who will feed the people in their time of need and absorb the repercussions in the future?
The pathways of life are clearly delineated by the choices we leave behind...
