Photos from Lucca and Illuxcon
I had some amazing trips this last month. The first was Lucca Comics and Games at the end of October in the Tuscany hillsides of Italy and then IlluxCon only a week ago in Pennsylvania.
Lucca is a beautiful city, and the convention there was packed, 140,000 plus attendees! I was so busy enjoying the scenery, company and shopping that I didn't get too many opportunities to play tourist, but here are a few shots from the weekend.

(Stephan Martiniere was nominated as well, but stepped aside after winning last year)
Good luck to everyone nominated this year, it is certainly a very deserving group!

San Diego Comic Con 2008.
Comic-Con was great! But you all know that....I've attached a few pics from the event, but unfortunately never got some of Irene wrestling Dan. I think I was too focused on cheerleading :)
Got to meet some awesome people, including John Howe and Greg Broadmore (you all know him as the creator of Doctor Grordbort's ray gun's) and the demos were all amazing... As much as I hate the cost of attending every year, can't imagine not being there for all the cool stuff and hanging with so many friends.

Donato wins the Society of Illustrators Hamilton King Award for "Golden Rose".
Donato Giancola will be honored with the Hamilton King Award by the Society of Illustrators in June for his painting "The Golden Rose". The award will be presented at a ceremony held in conjunction with the induction of new members to the Society's Hall of Fame.
The honor, created in 1965 by Mrs. Hamilton King in memory of her husband through a bequest, is presented annually for the best illustration of the year by a member of the Society which has been selected for inclusion in the Illustrators annual. In many ways a "best of show" award, the selection is made by former recipients and may be won only once.
Not only considered a significant peer-to-peer honor, the Hamilton King Award is widely seen as a major career benchmark. A list of past winners which includes Kinuko Craft, Michael Deas and Gregory Manchess reads like a Who's Who of the illustration community. Besides being scheduled to appear in Illustrators 50, the painting will also turn up in the Communication Arts Illustration Annual.

Donato at San Diego Comic Con 2008
July 24-27
San Diego Convention Center
Booth #4503
San Diego, CA
Once again Donato will be participating in San Diego's Comic Con International, this will be his 10th straight year attending! In celebration, Donato has just released Legends, his first portfolio bringing together eight of his most popular and powerful images of imaginary realism. The large 12 x 16 inch prints are elegantly produced on archival, heavy stock paper, and feature the best of Donato's fantasy women from book covers to private commissions to trading card art.
Also in celebration of this event, Donato has just completed a new painting of Iron Man to be premiered at the ComicCon. This is his first interpretation of this character since his childhood drawings over 20 years ago. The work of John Romita Jr. and Bob Layton on Iron Man in the 80's was a huge influence on his artistic development and is the direct reason Donato loves to create shiny metal robots and suits of armor to this day. It was a real pleasure for him to revisit his old friend. Iron Man as well as other original works of art, the Legends portfolio, and a huge selection of prints will be showcased at Donato Arts booth #4503. Stop by to get some art signed or just say hello!

UPDATE: As a promotion for Tor.com, Tor's art director Irene Gallo asked Donato to paint an Asus mini computer which you can win! This will be on display at San Diego Comic Con at the Tor booth where you can sign up to win it. You can also sign-up online to win at Tor.com. Check out Irene's post on the computer at igallo.blogspot.com and watch the video of the computer being painted here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RL6mW8ng-Xw
Also Spectrum, as part of our large booth #4503, will be hosting live art demonstrations throughout the convention with masterful talent!
Thursday, 3:00-4:30 Jon Foster
Friday 3:00-4:30 Rick Berry
Saturday 12:00-1:30 Donato Giancola (compositional drawing)
Saturday, 3:00-4:30 Stephan Martiniere (creature development)
